Assistant Professor Su Yan Receives 2020 ACES Early Career Award

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Assistant Professor Su Yan recently received the 2020 Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) Early Career Award “for contributions to linear and nonlinear electromagnetic and multiphysics modeling and simulation methods.” The ACES Early Career Award honors the achievements and contributions of researchers in the field of computational electromagnetics (CEM). Annually, only one researcher is selected for this award from a pool of international candidates aged 35 years or younger at the time of nomination.

“I am truly honored to be recognized by my peers in the CEM community,” says Dr. Yan. “Computational science and engineering methodologies have become the third scientific modality to explore the universe and have fundamentally changed the way modern devices and systems are being engineered. The revolutionary advancements made by the CEM community in the numerical modeling and simulation methods have impacted and even reshaped the landscape of many industries, including the semiconductor, communication, oil and gas, medical, and defense industries.”

Dr. Yan’s research will assist in further developing electromagnetics and multiphysics modeling and simulation methods. These methods will offer more accurate, efficient, and flexible solutions to challenging engineering problems. Dr. Yan’s research provides invaluable research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students in the computer science, computer engineering and electrical engineering programs. Students benefit from the interdisciplinary education in electromagnetics, physics, applied mathematics, and computational sciences, while significantly enhancing critical research skills. Dr. Yan is also currently working on a VIP project with a team of three graduate students with a research focus in CEM and five undergraduate students.

Dr. Yan has authored or coauthored several articles in peer-reviewed journals such as IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Journal on Multiscale and Multiphysics Computational Techniques, Progress in Electromagnetics Research, and Journal of Computational Physics, as well as a chapter on “new trends in finite element methods”, in the book titled New Trends in Computational Electromagnetics. He also serves as an associate editor for the IEEE Access Journal; an associate editor for the International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields; and has served as a lead guest editor for the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation.

We commemorate the life of Alumnus and Professor Arthur Sanderson Paul, Ph.D., professor emeritus in the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Paul served at Howard University for over 38 years as a faculty member in the College of Engineering and Architecture, then known as the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Sciences.
