Mission Statement

ABETThe missions of the University, the College of Architecture and Engineering, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) are stated below to allow the reader to see consistency of the EECS department mission with that of the College and the Institution. Our mission is published in the undergraduate handbook and on the Howard University web site where the University and the college missions are also published.

The Mission of Howard University

Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students.

Moreover, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching, research and service, committed to the development of distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate graduates and to the discovery of solutions to human problems in the United States and throughout the world. With an abiding interest in both domestic and international affairs, the University is committed to continuing to produce leaders for America and the global community.

The Mission of the College of Architecture and Engineering.

  1. To serve our students by providing learning environments and curricula which foster their ability to formulate and solve problems, manage complexity and uncertainty. To develop sensitivities to interpersonal relations. To support the acquisition of strong technical competencies.

The Mission of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

The mission of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is consistent with the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) and the University in that it strives to become a world leader in engineering research and education while dedicated to promotion of excellence among students, faculty and staff. Both curricula have been designed to achieve the Electrical Engineering Objectives and Computer Engineering Objectives

The mission of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is to:

  1. Provide its students with the engineering knowledge and education experiences required for them to compete and succeed as engineers at the highest levels of engineering practice.
     
  2. Engage in research that benefits Howard University and its local community, the United States and the global community.
     
  3. Advance, in concert with the College of Architecture and Engineering, Howard University’s goal of becoming a Historically Black University that is among the best of all its peer institutions.
